Formula Details
Material Cost = Quantity × Unit PriceCalculates the baseline cost of the material before adjustments for waste, taxes, or shipping.
QuantityRequired Quantity:The baseline amount of material needed.Unit PricePrice per Unit:The unit rate (cost per kg, sq ft, cu yd, etc.).
Waste Quantity = Quantity × (Waste % / 100)
Waste Cost = Waste Quantity × Unit PriceEstimates the volume and cost of extra materials needed to account for installation scrap, cutting waste, and transport damage.
Waste QuantityExtra Material Volume:The amount of scrap material calculated.Waste %Waste Allowance:Allowance percentage (typically 5% to 15%).
Discount = Subtotal × (Discount % / 100) [OR] Fixed AmountApplies either a percentage discount to the material subtotal or deducts a fixed bulk discount amount.
SubtotalMaterial Subtotal:Baseline Material Cost + Waste Cost.Discount %Discount Percentage:Percentage reduction rate.
Tax = (Subtotal - Discount + Delivery) × (Tax % / 100)Calculates total taxes applied. Tax is levied on the discounted subtotal plus delivery charges, in accordance with standard business conventions.
Tax BaseSubtotal - Discount + Delivery:The taxable total before taxes are applied.Tax %Tax Rate:Applicable sales tax, VAT, or GST rate.
Grand Total = Tax Base + Tax
Effective Cost per Unit = Grand Total / QuantityComputes the final procurement budget and normalizes it back to the baseline quantity to show the true cost per usable unit.
Grand TotalTotal Project Cost:Final budget inclusive of materials, waste, delivery, and taxes.Effective CostTrue Unit Rate:All-inclusive cost per initial unit of material.
Calculation Example
Calculate the total material procurement cost for a hardwood flooring layout of 800 sq ft, priced at $4.50 per sq ft. We allow 10% waste, apply a 5% bulk discount, and have a flat $150.00 delivery fee. Sales tax is 8%.
- 1.Baseline Material Cost
Cost = 800 sq ft × $4.50 = $3,600.00 - 2.Waste Quantity & Waste Cost
Waste Quantity = 800 sq ft × 10% = 80 sq ft Waste Cost = 80 sq ft × $4.50 = $360.00 - 3.Material Subtotal
Subtotal = $3,600.00 + $360.00 = $3,960.00 - 4.Discount Amount (5% on Subtotal)
Discount = $3,960.00 × 5% = $198.00 - 5.Taxable Base (Subtotal - Discount + Delivery)
Tax Base = $3,960.00 - $198.00 + $150.00 = $3,912.00 - 6.Sales Tax (8%)
Tax = $3,912.00 × 8% = $312.96 - 7.Grand Total & Effective Unit Cost
Grand Total = $3,912.00 + $312.96 = $4,224.96 Effective Cost per Unit = $4,224.96 / 800 sq ft = $5.28 / sq ft
Estimate the cost of purchasing 15 cubic yards of concrete from a supplier, priced at $120.00 per cubic yard. We allow 12% spillage/waste, have a flat delivery charge of $200.00, apply a fixed discount of $100.00, and pay 6% sales tax.
- 1.Baseline Material Cost
Cost = 15 cu yd × $120.00 = $1,800.00 - 2.Waste Quantity & Waste Cost
Waste Quantity = 15 cu yd × 12% = 1.8 cu yd Waste Cost = 1.8 cu yd × $120.00 = $216.00 - 3.Material Subtotal
Subtotal = $1,800.00 + $216.00 = $2,016.00 - 4.Discount Amount (Fixed)
Discount = $100.00 - 5.Taxable Base (Subtotal - Discount + Delivery)
Tax Base = $2,016.00 - $100.00 + $200.00 = $2,116.00 - 6.Sales Tax (6%)
Tax = $2,116.00 × 6% = $126.96 - 7.Grand Total & Effective Unit Cost
Grand Total = $2,116.00 + $126.96 = $2,242.96 Effective Cost per Unit = $2,242.96 / 15 cu yd = $149.53 / cu yd
Calculate the procurement budget for 2,500 sq ft of metal roof panels, priced at $1.80 per sq ft. We allow a 15% waste allowance for cutting hips and valleys. A bulk project discount of $150.00 is applied, and delivery charges are $120.00. Sales tax rate is 7.5%.
- 1.Baseline Material Cost
Cost = 2,500 sq ft × $1.80 = $4,500.00 - 2.Waste Quantity & Waste Cost
Waste Quantity = 2,500 sq ft × 15% = 375 sq ft Waste Cost = 375 sq ft × $1.80 = $675.00 - 3.Material Subtotal
Subtotal = $4,500.00 + $675.00 = $5,175.00 - 4.Discount Amount (Fixed)
Discount = $150.00 - 5.Taxable Base (Subtotal - Discount + Delivery)
Tax Base = $5,175.00 - $150.00 + $120.00 = $5,145.00 - 6.Sales Tax (7.5%)
Tax = $5,145.00 × 7.5% = $385.88 - 7.Grand Total & Effective Unit Cost
Grand Total = $5,145.00 + $385.88 = $5,530.88 Effective Cost per Unit = $5,530.88 / 2,500 sq ft = $2.21 / sq ft
