Follow these steps to estimate tile quantities, grout allowances, packaging boxes, and overall material costs:

  2. Select Room Shape: Select from Rectangle, Square, Circle, Triangle, or L-Shaped.
  3. Choose Unit System: Toggle between Imperial (ft/in/yd) and Metric (m/cm/mm) in the top right.
  4. Enter Dimensions: Fill in the required room measurements matching the selected room shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need?
Divide the total surface area of your floor or wall by the coverage area of a single tile. If you are using grout spacing, make sure to add the grout joint width to both the length and width of the tile to find its nominal coverage area. Always add a waste allowance (10% is standard) for cuts.
How much waste should I allow for tiling?
For standard rectangular layouts, a 10% waste allowance is recommended. If the room has curves, diagonals, or an L-shape, allow 12% to 15% waste, as these patterns require more complex cuts and diagonal trims.
How many tile boxes should I buy?
Tiles are sold in boxes. Check the box details for 'Tiles Per Box'. Divide the total tiles required by the tiles per box, and round up to the nearest whole box. Buying complete boxes protects tiles from shipping damage and ensures consistent dye lots.
Does grout joint spacing affect tile quantity?
Yes. Grout lines increase the effective footprint of each tile. For small tiles (like 4" × 4") or wide joints, grout spacing can significantly reduce the number of tiles required. For large tiles, the difference is negligible, but it is still recommended to calculate with grout spacing for accuracy.
Can I calculate using custom tile sizes?
Yes. Choose 'Custom Tile Size...' in the Tile Size Preset dropdown. The Length and Width fields will unlock, allowing you to enter any custom tile specifications in inches (Imperial) or millimeters (Metric).
How accurate is this tile estimate?
This calculator provides a precise geometric estimation. Real-world requirements may vary slightly depending on your tiling pattern (e.g. brick bond, herringbone, diagonal) and cuts. We recommend purchasing a small excess (at least 1 extra box) to keep as spares for future repairs.
