Formula Details
Area calculations vary by Room Shape:Rectangle: Area = Length × Width Square: Area = Side × Side Circle: Area = π × (Diameter / 2)² Triangle: Area = 0.5 × Base × Height L-Shaped: Area = (Section 1 Length × Section 1 Width) + (Section 2 Length × Section 2 Width)
Length / WidthDimensions:Measurements of the rooms or walls being tiled.
Nominal Tile Area = (Tile Length + Grout Width) × (Tile Width + Grout Width)Calculates the total surface area covered by a single tile, including its surrounding grout lines.
Tile LengthLength:Physical length of the selected tile.Tile WidthWidth:Physical width of the selected tile.Grout WidthGrout Joint Spacing:Width of the joint space between tiles (defaults to 0 if not provided).
Tiles Required = (Surface Area / Nominal Tile Area) × (1 + Waste Percentage / 100)Estimates the total number of tiles needed by dividing the room area by nominal tile area, then adding a waste percentage and rounding up to the nearest whole tile.
Surface AreaTotal Area:The calculated surface area of the floor or wall.Waste PercentageWaste Allowance:Additional tile buffer percentage for cut pieces and corner fits (usually 10%).
Waste Allowance (Tiles) = Tiles Required - Raw Tiles Count (Rounded Up)Determines how many extra tiles are bought specifically for waste, cuts, and replacements.
Raw Tiles CountNet Tiles Needed:The raw calculated number of tiles without waste added.
Boxes Required = Tiles Required / Tiles Per BoxConverts individual tile requirements into boxes to buy, rounded up to the nearest whole box.
Tiles Per BoxPack Quantity:The number of individual tiles packaged in a single box.
Estimated Cost = Tiles Required × Cost Per TileCalculates the total project tile cost based on individual tile price.
Cost Per TileUnit Cost:The retail cost of a single tile.
Calculation Example
Calculate tile requirements for a bathroom floor measuring 10 feet long and 8 feet wide. Use 12" × 12" tiles with a 1/8" (0.125") grout joint width, 10% waste allowance, 10 tiles per box, and $3.50 cost per tile.
- 1.Calculate total floor area.
Area = 10 ft × 8 ft = 80 sq ft - 2.Compute nominal tile dimensions in feet.
Nominal Length = 12" + 0.125" = 12.125" (1.0104 ft) | Nominal Width = 12" + 0.125" = 12.125" (1.0104 ft) - 3.Compute nominal tile coverage area.
Nominal Tile Area = 1.0104 ft × 1.0104 ft = 1.0209 sq ft - 4.Compute raw tiles needed.
Raw Count = 80 sq ft / 1.0209 sq ft = 78.36 Tiles - 5.Apply 10% waste allowance and round up.
Tiles Required = 78.36 × 1.10 = 86.20 => 87 Tiles - 6.Calculate boxes of tiles required.
Boxes Required = 87 / 10 = 8.70 => 9 Boxes - 7.Calculate waste tiles.
Waste Tiles = 87 - ceil(78.36) = 87 - 79 = 8 Tiles - 8.Calculate overall cost.
Total Cost = 87 Tiles × $3.50 = $304.50
Calculate metric quantities for a kitchen backsplash wall measuring 3.6 meters long and 0.75 meters high. Use 100 × 100 mm tiles, a 2 mm grout joint, 10% waste, and ₹40 per tile.
- 1.Calculate total wall area.
Area = 3.6 m × 0.75 m = 2.7 sq m - 2.Compute nominal tile dimensions in meters.
Nominal Length = 100 mm + 2 mm = 102 mm (0.102 m) | Nominal Width = 100 mm + 2 mm = 102 mm (0.102 m) - 3.Compute nominal tile coverage area.
Nominal Tile Area = 0.102 m × 0.102 m = 0.010404 sq m - 4.Compute raw tiles needed.
Raw Count = 2.7 sq m / 0.010404 sq m = 259.5 Tiles - 5.Apply 10% waste and round up.
Tiles Required = 259.5 × 1.10 = 285.45 => 286 Tiles - 6.Calculate waste tiles.
Waste Tiles = 286 - ceil(259.5) = 286 - 260 = 26 Tiles - 7.Calculate total cost.
Total Cost = 286 Tiles × ₹40 = ₹11,440
Calculate tile requirements for an L-shaped living room floor. Section 1 is 18 feet by 15 feet. Section 2 is 8 feet by 6 feet. Use 24" × 24" (2 ft × 2 ft) large tiles, 1/8" (0.125") grout joint, 12% waste, 5 tiles per box, and 8.5 lbs tile weight.
- 1.Calculate total floor area by adding the two sections.
Area = (18 ft × 15 ft) + (8 ft × 6 ft) = 270 + 48 = 318 sq ft - 2.Compute nominal tile dimensions in feet.
Nominal Length = 24" + 0.125" = 24.125" (2.0104 ft) | Nominal Width = 24" + 0.125" = 24.125" (2.0104 ft) - 3.Compute nominal tile coverage area.
Nominal Tile Area = 2.0104 ft × 2.0104 ft = 4.0417 sq ft - 4.Compute raw tiles needed.
Raw Count = 318 sq ft / 4.0417 sq ft = 78.68 Tiles - 5.Apply 12% waste allowance and round up.
Tiles Required = 78.68 × 1.12 = 88.12 => 89 Tiles - 6.Calculate boxes required.
Boxes Required = 89 / 5 = 17.80 => 18 Boxes - 7.Calculate estimated total tile weight.
Total Weight = 89 Tiles × 8.5 lbs = 756.5 lbs
How to Use
Follow these steps to estimate tile quantities, grout allowances, packaging boxes, and overall material costs:
- Select Project Type: Choose Floor Tiling or Wall Tiling to set contextual expectations and default grout joint widths.
- Select Room Shape: Select from Rectangle, Square, Circle, Triangle, or L-Shaped.
- Choose Unit System: Toggle between Imperial (ft/in/yd) and Metric (m/cm/mm) in the top right.
- Enter Dimensions: Fill in the required room measurements matching the selected room shape.
- Select Tile Size: Choose a preset standard tile size or select "Custom Tile Size" to enter specific tile length and width.
- Set Grout and Waste: Adjust the grout joint width and slide the waste percentage (10% is recommended for straight runs, 15% for diagonal layouts).
- Optional Details: Enter tiles per box, unit tile weight, or tile cost to get packaging, weight, and pricing breakdowns.
- Calculate: Click Calculate to view all results instantly in the results card stack. Click Reset to clear the form.
