Formula Details

Roof Surface Area Formula
Surface Area = Footprint Plan Area / cos(θ)

For Gable, Hip, Shed, and Flat roofs, the sloped area is calculated by dividing the total horizontal footprint (including overhang) by the cosine of the pitch angle θ. For Gambrel and Mansard roofs, the lower and upper sections are calculated independently with their respective pitches and summed.

Variables Explained
  • Footprint Plan Area
    Plan Area:Total horizontal footprint: (Base Length + 2 × Overhang) × (Base Width + 2 × Overhang).
  • θ (Theta)
    Pitch Angle:Slope of the roof in degrees, derived from the pitch ratio.
Roof Pitch & Angle Formula
Angle (θ) = arctan(Rise / Run) × (180 / π)

Pitch is usually expressed as a ratio of rise in inches per 12 inches of run (e.g. 6:12). The slope angle in degrees is calculated using inverse tangent.

Variables Explained
  • Rise
    Vertical Rise:Inches of vertical height gained per 12 inches of horizontal run.
  • Run
    Horizontal Run:Horizontal distance (standardized to 12 inches in US building practices).
Roofing Material Coverage Formula
Quantity = Math.ceil(Total Sloped Area × (1 + Waste / 100) / Material Coverage)

Calculates the gross material required (bundles, sheets, or tiles) by applying a waste buffer and dividing by the coverage of one unit, rounded up to the nearest whole unit.

Variables Explained
  • Material Coverage
    Unit Coverage:Area covered by one unit: bundle (e.g. Asphalt Shingles covers 33.3 sq ft), sheet, tile, or box.
  • Waste Percentage
    Waste Buffer:Percentage allowance for trimmings, hips, valleys, and errors.
Waste Allowance Formula
Waste Area = Surface Area × (Waste Percentage / 100)

Determines the square footage or square meter buffer added to the net roof surface area to account for valleys, hips, offcuts, and mistakes.

Variables Explained
  • Waste Percentage
    Waste Rate:Standard waste rates: 10% for Gable roofs; 12% to 15% for Hip or multi-pitch roofs.
Estimated Cost Formula
Cost = Quantity × Price Per Unit OR Cost = Area × Price Per Area

Determines project costs using a pricing basis, either per unit (e.g., per shingle bundle, tile piece, metal sheet) or per unit area.

Variables Explained
  • Price Per Unit
    Unit Price:Cost of a single bundle, sheet, tile, or box of material.
  • Price Per Area
    Area Price:Cost per square foot or square meter of roof plane.

Calculation Example

Worked Example
Scenario

Calculate roofing shingle bundles and underlayment rolls for a small residential house. The footprint of the house is 30 ft by 20 ft with a 1 ft overhang on all sides. The roof is a standard Gable roof with a 6:12 pitch. We will use Asphalt Shingles (33.3 sq ft coverage per bundle) and apply a 10% waste allowance.

Calculation Steps
  1. 1.Calculate total footprint dimensions including overhangs.
    Footprint Length = 30 ft + 2 ft = 32 ft Footprint Width = 20 ft + 2 ft = 22 ft
  2. 2.Calculate plan area.
    Plan Area = 32 ft × 22 ft = 704 sq ft
  3. 3.Calculate pitch angle for 6:12 pitch.
    θ = arctan(6 / 12) = 26.57° cos(26.57°) = 0.8944
  4. 4.Calculate sloped roof surface area.
    Surface Area = Plan Area / cos(26.57°) = 704 / 0.8944 = 787.11 sq ft
  5. 5.Estimate underlayment rolls required (each roll covers 400 sq ft).
    Rolls = Math.ceil(787.11 / 400) = Math.ceil(1.97) = 2 Rolls
  6. 6.Apply 10% waste allowance to surface area.
    Material Area Needed = 787.11 sq ft × 1.10 = 865.82 sq ft
  7. 7.Calculate shingle bundles needed (each bundle covers 33.3 sq ft).
    Bundles = Math.ceil(865.82 / 33.3) = Math.ceil(26.0) = 26 Bundles
Final Quantity Needed26 Bundles of shingles and 2 Rolls of underlayment.
Worked Example
Scenario

Calculate concrete tiles for a two-story home with a Hip roof. The footprint is 50 ft by 30 ft with a 1 ft overhang. The pitch is a steep 8:12. We will use Concrete Tiles (1.1 sq ft coverage per tile) and apply a 15% waste allowance due to the hips and valleys.

Calculation Steps
  1. 1.Calculate footprint dimensions including overhangs.
    Footprint Length = 50 ft + 2 ft = 52 ft Footprint Width = 30 ft + 2 ft = 32 ft
  2. 2.Calculate plan area.
    Plan Area = 52 ft × 32 ft = 1,664 sq ft
  3. 3.Calculate pitch angle for 8:12 pitch.
    θ = arctan(8 / 12) = 33.69° cos(33.69°) = 0.8321
  4. 4.Calculate sloped surface area.
    Surface Area = Plan Area / cos(33.69°) = 1,664 / 0.8321 = 1,999.88 sq ft
  5. 5.Apply 15% waste allowance.
    Material Area Needed = 1,999.88 sq ft × 1.15 = 2,299.86 sq ft
  6. 6.Calculate concrete tiles needed.
    Tiles = Math.ceil(2,299.86 / 1.1) = Math.ceil(2,090.78) = 2,091 Tiles
  7. 7.Calculate underlayment rolls needed.
    Rolls = Math.ceil(1,999.88 / 400) = Math.ceil(5.0) = 5 Rolls
Final Quantity Needed2,091 Concrete tiles and 5 Rolls of underlayment.
Worked Example
Scenario

Calculate metal roofing sheets for a detached garage with a single-slope Shed roof in metric units. The footprint is 6.0 m by 6.0 m with a 0.3 m overhang. The pitch is 4:12. We will use Metal Panels (3.34 m² coverage per panel) and apply a 10% waste allowance.

Calculation Steps
  1. 1.Calculate footprint dimensions in meters.
    Footprint Length = 6.0 m + 0.6 m = 6.6 m Footprint Width = 6.0 m + 0.6 m = 6.6 m
  2. 2.Calculate plan area.
    Plan Area = 6.6 m × 6.6 m = 43.56 m²
  3. 3.Calculate pitch angle for 4:12 pitch.
    θ = arctan(4 / 12) = 18.43° cos(18.43°) = 0.9487
  4. 4.Calculate sloped surface area.
    Surface Area = Plan Area / cos(18.43°) = 43.56 / 0.9487 = 45.92 m²
  5. 5.Apply 10% waste allowance.
    Material Area Needed = 45.92 m² × 1.10 = 50.51 m²
  6. 6.Calculate metal panels required.
    Panels = Math.ceil(50.51 / 3.34) = Math.ceil(15.12) = 16 Panels
  7. 7.Calculate underlayment rolls (metric rolls cover 37.2 m²).
    Rolls = Math.ceil(45.92 / 37.2) = Math.ceil(1.23) = 2 Rolls
Final Quantity Needed16 Metal panels and 2 Rolls of underlayment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my roof area?
To calculate roof area, measure the horizontal plan footprint of your house (Length × Width), add twice the overhang on each dimension, and then divide by the cosine of the pitch angle. Alternatively, you can use our calculator which performs these geometric steps for Gable, Hip, Shed, Flat, Gambrel, and Mansard roof structures.
What is roof pitch?
Roof pitch is a measure of the steepness of a roof. It is written as a ratio of the vertical rise to the horizontal run, typically expressed as rise-in-inches per 12-inches of run (e.g. 6:12). A pitch of 6:12 means the roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches horizontally, which equates to a 26.57-degree angle.
How much roofing material do I need?
To estimate roofing materials, take the sloped surface area of the roof, apply a waste percentage buffer (10% to 15%), and divide by the coverage area of a single unit of your selected material (e.g., 33.3 sq ft for an asphalt shingle bundle, or 36 sq ft for a metal roofing sheet).
Why should I include a waste percentage?
Valleys, hips, eaves, and ridges require angled cutting of shingles or panels. These offcuts cannot usually be reused, resulting in wasted material. A 10% waste allowance is standard for basic Gable roofs, whereas 12% to 15% is recommended for Hip roofs or complex roof shapes with multiple valleys.
Which roofing material should I choose?
Asphalt Shingles are cost-effective, versatile, and easy to install. Metal Roofing offers longevity and energy efficiency. Clay and Concrete Tiles are extremely durable and offer premium aesthetics but require a strong framing support due to their heavy weight. Wood Shingles provide a rustic, natural appearance but require regular maintenance.
How accurate is the estimate?
This calculator estimates materials based on geometric footprints, standard material coverage rates, and uniform pitch factors. Actual installation amounts may vary slightly due to complex structural shapes, flashing details, valley overlaps, and specific brand packaging. Always cross-check results with a certified roofing contractor.
