Formula Details
Wall Area = Perimeter × Wall HeightCalculates the total wall area before openings. Perimeter depends on Room Shape: Rectangle: Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width) Square: Perimeter = 4 × Side Length Custom Wall: Perimeter = Wall Width
PerimeterTotal Wall Length:The total linear length of the walls being wallpapered.Wall HeightCeiling Height:The floor-to-ceiling vertical height of the wall.
Net Wall Area = Gross Wall Area - Doors & Windows AreaSubtracts non-wallpapered elements from the gross wall area. Door and window dimensions can be standard (Door = 21 ft² / 1.89 m²; Window = 15 ft² / 1.2 m²) or custom-entered.
Doors & Windows AreaOpenings Area:Total subtracted surface area of doors, windows, and custom openings.
Usable Coverage = Strips Per Roll × Roll Width × Wall HeightEstimates actual wall surface area covered by one roll, accounting for pattern matches: Strips Per Roll = ⌊Roll Length / Adjusted Strip Height⌋ Adjusted Strip Height = ⌈Wall Height / Pattern Repeat⌉ × Pattern Repeat (if pattern repeat > 0; otherwise Adjusted Height = Wall Height).
Pattern RepeatDesign Interval:The vertical spacing before the wallpaper design repeat matches up.Strips Per RollFull Height Strips:The number of complete ceiling-to-floor strips a single roll yields.
Rolls Required = ⌈Net Wall Area × (1 + Waste % / 100) / Usable Coverage⌉Calculates the total rolls to buy. We multiply the net wall area by the safety waste buffer (usually 10%), divide by the usable coverage of one roll, and round up to the next integer.
Waste %Waste Safety Allowance:Extra margin added for cuts, trimming alignment, and layout errors (typically 10%).Usable CoverageNet Roll Coverage:Effective wall area covered by one roll after accounting for pattern cuts.
Estimated Cost = Rolls Required × Price Per RollEstimates material cost if roll pricing is provided. Excludes tools, primer, wallpaper paste, or professional labor.
Price Per RollUnit Cost:Purchase price of a single roll of wallpaper.
Calculation Example
Bedroom: Estimate wallpaper rolls for a rectangular room measuring 15 ft long by 12 ft wide with 8 ft ceiling height. Subtract 1 standard door and 1 standard window. Use European rolls (20.5 in wide by 33 ft long) with 10% waste buffer. The wallpaper has no pattern repeat. Each roll costs $35.00.
- 1.Calculate Room Perimeter.
Perimeter = 2 × (15 ft + 12 ft) = 54 ft - 2.Calculate Gross Wall Area.
Gross Area = 54 ft × 8 ft = 432.00 sq ft - 3.Calculate Openings Area.
Openings = (1 Door × 21 sq ft) + (1 Window × 15 sq ft) = 36.00 sq ft - 4.Calculate Net Wall Area.
Net Area = 432.00 - 36.00 = 396.00 sq ft - 5.Calculate usable roll coverage (Roll length = 33 ft, width = 20.5 in = 1.708 ft).
Strips Per Roll = ⌊33 ft / 8 ft Adjusted Strip Height⌋ = 4 strips Usable Coverage = 4 strips × 1.708 ft × 8 ft = 54.67 sq ft - 6.Apply Waste Percentage.
Net Area with Waste = 396.00 sq ft × 1.10 = 435.60 sq ft - 7.Calculate rolls required (round up).
Rolls Required = ⌈435.60 sq ft / 54.67 sq ft⌉ = 8 Rolls - 8.Calculate cost.
Cost = 8 Rolls × $35.00 = $280.00
Living Room: Estimate wallpaper rolls for a square room measuring 14 ft by 14 ft with 9 ft ceiling height. Deduct 2 custom doors (each 3.5 ft wide by 7 ft tall) and 1 custom window (4 ft wide by 5 ft tall). Use Double Rolls (27 in wide by 27 ft long) with a 12% waste buffer and an 18-inch pattern repeat. Each roll is priced at ₹2,500.
- 1.Calculate Room Perimeter.
Perimeter = 4 × 14 ft = 56 ft - 2.Calculate Gross Wall Area.
Gross Area = 56 ft × 9 ft = 504.00 sq ft - 3.Calculate Custom Openings Area.
Doors = 2 × (3.5 × 7) = 49 sq ft Windows = 1 × (4 × 5) = 20 sq ft Openings = 69.00 sq ft - 4.Calculate Net Wall Area.
Net Area = 504.00 - 69.00 = 435.00 sq ft - 5.Adjust wall height for 18 in (1.5 ft) pattern repeat.
Repeats per strip = ⌈9 ft / 1.5 ft⌉ = 6 repeats Adjusted Strip Height = 6 × 1.5 ft = 9.0 ft - 6.Calculate usable roll coverage (Roll length = 27 ft, width = 27 in = 2.25 ft).
Strips Per Roll = ⌊27 ft / 9.0 ft Adjusted Strip Height⌋ = 3 strips Usable Coverage = 3 strips × 2.25 ft × 9 ft = 60.75 sq ft - 7.Apply Waste Percentage.
Net Area with Waste = 435.00 sq ft × 1.12 = 487.20 sq ft - 8.Calculate rolls required (round up).
Rolls Required = ⌈487.20 sq ft / 60.75 sq ft⌉ = 8 Rolls - 9.Calculate cost.
Cost = 8 Rolls × ₹2,500 = ₹20,000.00
Office Wall: Estimate wallpaper rolls for a custom feature wall measuring 6 meters wide by 2.4 meters tall. Deduct 1 custom window (1.2 m wide by 1.2 m tall). Use metric Standard Rolls (53 cm wide by 10 m long) with 10% waste buffer. The wallpaper has a 30 cm pattern repeat. Each roll costs €25.
- 1.Calculate Gross Wall Area.
Gross Area = 6 m × 2.4 m = 14.40 sq m - 2.Calculate Opening Area.
Openings = 1.2 m × 1.2 m = 1.44 sq m - 3.Calculate Net Wall Area.
Net Area = 14.40 - 1.44 = 12.96 sq m - 4.Adjust wall height for 30 cm (0.3 m) pattern repeat.
Repeats per strip = ⌈2.4 m / 0.3 m⌉ = 8 repeats Adjusted Strip Height = 8 × 0.3 m = 2.4 m (no alignment waste since 2.4 is a multiple of 0.3) - 5.Calculate usable roll coverage (Roll length = 10 m, width = 53 cm = 0.53 m).
Strips Per Roll = ⌊10 m / 2.4 m Adjusted Strip Height⌋ = 4 strips Usable Coverage = 4 strips × 0.53 m × 2.4 m = 5.09 sq m - 6.Apply Waste Percentage.
Net Area with Waste = 12.96 sq m × 1.10 = 14.26 sq m - 7.Calculate rolls required.
Rolls Required = ⌈14.26 sq m / 5.09 sq m⌉ = 3 Rolls - 8.Calculate cost.
Cost = 3 Rolls × €25 = €75
