How to Use

Follow these simple steps to estimate your aggregate and gravel volume, weight, and project cost:

  1. Select a material: Choose a preset type (e.g. gravel, crushed stone, limestone) or choose custom to define your own material density.
  2. Select the project shape: Choose from Rectangle, Square, Circle, Triangle, or Trench.
  3. Enter measurements: Input the required dimensions (length, width, diameter, or base) and the thickness/depth of your layer.
  4. Choose the unit system: Toggle between Imperial and Metric systems to match your measurements.
  5. Adjust density: Override the automatically loaded density value if your supplier provides a custom rating.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between gravel and aggregate?
Aggregate is a broad category of particulate material used in construction, including sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, and recycled concrete. Gravel refers specifically to naturally occurring, loose, rounded rock fragments. All gravel is aggregate, but not all aggregate is gravel.
How accurate are the density values?
The preset densities represent standard dry bulk averages. Real-world density varies based on moisture content, particle sizes, and source quarry. For maximum estimation accuracy, consult your local supplier for the exact bulk density rating.
Can I enter a custom density?
Yes. Select 'Custom Material' from the material type dropdown list and enter the custom density in either pounds per cubic foot (lbs/ft³) or kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³) depending on your selected unit system.
Which unit system should I choose?
Choose Imperial (ft, in, yd) if you measure dimensions in feet/inches and purchase aggregate in cubic yards or short tons. Choose Metric (m, cm, mm) if your construction layouts are drawn in metric and material is purchased in cubic meters or metric tonnes.
How is material weight calculated?
Weight is computed by multiplying the total material volume by its bulk density: Weight = Volume × Density. Because bulk density changes with material type and moisture content, entering an exact density value will refine the estimated tonnage.
How is project cost estimated?
Cost is calculated by multiplying the material quantity (either weight in tons or volume in cubic yards/meters) by the cost per unit. You can input your currency and specify the pricing unit basis to match the supplier's quotation.
