How to Use

Follow these simple steps to estimate your sand requirements:

  1. Choose your unit system: Toggle between imperial (feet, inches, yards) and metric (meters, centimeters, millimeters) using the selector at the top.
  2. Select the calculation tab: Click the tab corresponding to what you want to estimate — Volume, Weight, Bags, or Cost.
  3. Enter your values: Input dimensions, volume, weight, or pricing values. Select the appropriate shape (for volume) or sand type (for weight). All fields must be positive numbers.
  4. Click Calculate: Press the Calculate button to display results in the results panel. Results are not computed while typing.
  5. Review results: Read the estimated volume, weight, bags, or cost in the results card. Use Reset Fields to start over.

What is the difference between sharp sand and builder's sand?
Sharp sand (also called coarse sand or grit sand) has larger, angular grains and is ideal for mixing concrete, laying paving slabs, and drainage layers. Builder's sand (also called soft sand or bricklayer's sand) has finer, rounder grains and is mainly used for mortar, plastering, and rendering. Sharp sand provides better structural binding, while builder's sand offers a smoother finish.
How does moisture content affect sand weight?
Moisture significantly changes the bulk density of sand. Dry sand typically weighs around 1,602 kg per cubic meter (100 lbs/ft³), while fully saturated wet sand can weigh up to 1,922 kg per cubic meter (120 lbs/ft³). When ordering sand by weight, always account for whether it will be delivered dry or damp, as this directly impacts the quantity you receive.
How do I convert between cubic yards and metric tons of sand?
One cubic yard of dry sand weighs approximately 1.35 metric tons (2,700 lbs). To convert, multiply the volume in cubic yards by 1.35 to get the approximate weight in metric tons. However, this varies by moisture level and sand type, so always confirm the specific bulk density with your supplier.
What sand depth is recommended for different applications?
For paver base layers, a 1 to 2 inch (25 to 50 mm) bedding layer of sharp sand is typical. For children's sandboxes, a depth of 12 to 18 inches (300 to 450 mm) is recommended. For leveling ground before laying turf, a thin 0.5 to 1 inch (12 to 25 mm) layer of sand is sufficient. Always compact the sand to the target depth for structural applications.
How much extra sand should I order beyond the calculated amount?
It is standard practice to order 5 to 10 percent more sand than calculated. Extra material compensates for compaction loss, uneven ground, spillage during handling, and minor measurement variances. For large-scale projects, rounding up to the nearest full delivery load is also advisable to avoid material shortfalls.
