How to Use

Follow these simple steps to calculate the required cement bags and quantities for your project:

  1. Choose your unit system: Toggle between imperial (feet and inches) and metric (meters, centimeters, and millimeters) at the top of the calculator card.
  2. Select the project tab: Select the application tab matching your project: Concrete Mix, Mortar Mix, Plaster Mix, or Floor Screed.
  3. Input dimensions: Enter the concrete/mortar volume or the wall/floor surface area and layer thickness. Make sure to enter positive values.
  4. Choose mix proportions: Select a standard preset ratio or choose "Custom Ratio" to enter your specific mix parts.
  5. Configure bag weight: Select a standard bag size (25 kg, 40 kg, 50 kg) or enter a custom bag size weight (e.g. 94 lbs for standard US cement bags).
  6. Calculate cement: Click the Calculate button to view the estimated bags count, dry cement volume, weight, and sand/gravel quantities in the results card.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard cement-to-sand ratio for wall plastering?
For interior walls, a mix ratio of 1:5 or 1:6 is standard, meaning 1 part cement to 5 or 6 parts sand. For exterior walls or ceilings that require high moisture resistance and durability, a richer mix of 1:4 is recommended to prevent water penetration and cracking.
Why does dry volume differ from wet volume when mixing cement?
When dry cement, sand, and stone are mixed with water, the particles settle into the void spaces between each other. This results in volume shrinkage. For concrete, dry volume is calculated as wet volume multiplied by 1.54. For mortar, plaster, and screed, the multiplier is 1.33.
How many bags of cement are in a cubic yard or cubic meter?
A standard cubic meter of standard concrete typically requires about 6 to 8 bags of 50 kg cement depending on the mix ratio strength (e.g. M20 requires more than M10). A cubic yard of concrete requires approximately 5 to 6 bags of 94 lb cement.
What is the shelf life of cement bags and how should they be stored?
Cement is highly moisture-sensitive. Store bags off the ground on wooden pallets in a dry, enclosed space. Properly stored cement has a shelf life of up to 3 months. If cement has hard lumps that cannot be powdered by hand, it has hydration-cured and should not be used for structural purposes.
Can I use standard nominal concrete mix ratios for structural beams?
Nominal ratios like 1:1.5:3 or 1:2:4 are suitable for standard concrete structures (slabs, footings, paths). However, for structural elements like large support beams, high-rise columns, or post-tensioned slabs, always consult a structural engineer for a professional mix design that specifies aggregate gradings and water-cement ratios.
